MEDIA RELEASE: Happy Honk Awards for Weber State University & Local Group for Waterfowl Rescue

OGDEN, Utah. (Nov. 2, 2021)In Defense of AnimalsNational Goose Protection Coalition is pleased to share a story of compassion for waterfowl from Ogden, Utah. The National Goose Protection Coalition has issued double Happy Honk certificates to Weber State University (WSU) and Wasatch Domestic Waterfowl Resource (WDWR) for rescuing and rehoming more than 60 at-risk ducks and geese this fall.

“Our coalition is thrilled to honor Weber State University and Wasatch Domestic Waterfowl Resource for their notable good deeds toward geese and ducks!” said Lisa Levinson, of In Defense of Animals. “We’re impressed with their coordinated efforts to help animals who were originally abandoned and discarded.”

This September, WSU joined forces with WDWR to safely gather 30 ducks and 34 geese while the campus’ Ada Lindquist Plaza water feature was drained for maintenance. After 12 hours of combined effort, the ducks and geese were safely collected and all were adopted out to happy homes by WDWR.

Over the years, abandoned domestic ducks and geese have bred to create the current population. The University does not officially care for the birds, and reports that several of the animals have been hit by cars and attacked by an off-leash dog.

“This means so much to me and the rest of us working tirelessly for the waterfowl and animals in general,” said Adison Smith, of WDWR upon receiving the award. “I will frame the certificate and hang it in our future location.”
