Promising News in Fight to Save America's Wild Horses & Burros

Early this week, leaders of the Senate Appropriations Committee moved to maintain existing protections for wild equines by approving the Senate's version of the 2018 Interior Department budget. The House-passed version of the budget authorizes both "euthanizing" or selling captive mustangs and burros for slaughter, as well as killing animals on the range that the BLM deems to be "excess." Mercifully, the Senate has not included these murderous plans proposed by the White House and the Interior Department.

We thank you from the very bottom of our hearts for all of you who took the time to make repeated calls, and for those of you who filled out our alert which sent messages to every single member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. We all spoke out loudly and persistently, urging solutions, not slaughter, and it made a huge difference. Every single action was important!

However, the horses aren't safe yet. The Senate and House must come to terms on this issue by early December. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) played a key role in this week's Senate decision. We invite you to call his office (202-224-6621) to thank him for retaining protections for America's wild equines, and let him know that we'll be counting on his advocacy as the fight goes on.
