Save Wild Equines from Murderous Budget Proposals
Once again, the enemies of wild horses and burros are looking for new ways to rid America’s western ranges of their free-roaming herds, this time brandishing torturous sterilization devices in one hand, and cash-for-kill buyers in the other. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has unveiled dreadful plans that put tens of thousands of wild horses and burros in grave danger; they need your urgent help right now!
The BLM is “analyzing” killing plans for healthy horses and burros, while planning one of the worst sterilization programs we’ve ever seen.
The proposed sterilization method is an archaic, unsafe procedure that tears out the ovaries of wild mares and burro jennets, putting them at high risk of death by evisceration or internal infection.
This vile plan has been set in motion by the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, a powerful government body responsible for setting state level spending. In addition to the sickening procedure above, the Committee also recommends paying “adopters” $1000 to take captive equines, effectively incentivizing kill buyers to put them into the slaughter pipeline.
In Defense of Animals stands with the National Academy of Sciences and more than 100 other national organizations advocating for wild equines. We are doing everything in our power to fight for wild horses and burros and to offer practical solutions including the use of safe, reversible fertility control. But we urgently need your voice to speak out for the horses: they need your urgent action!
What you can do:
1. Please make three simple phone calls. Personal contact with Congress is the most effective thing you can do for the wild horses and burros.
Find your two US Senators and your one US Representative’s numbers here: www.idausa.org/findmyrep. State your name, your town or city, and telephone number. Be courteous. You may wish to say:
Please oppose any language or provision in the 2019 budget that would allow for the sterilization, unlimited sales, or “euthanasia” of wild horses and burros. I want the BLM to conduct on-the-range management that is humane and sustainable.
2. Please send our email (with your personal touch) to your Congresspersons by filling out the form on the right-hand side of this page.
