New York Residents: Urge Gov. Hochul To Ban Cruel Wildlife Killing Contests

Wildlife killing contests are events where people compete to kill as many of a certain animal as possible in a limited time frame. Victims of these unspeakably brutal events in New York include squirrels, crows, foxes, coyotes, and rabbits, among other animals.
A.2917/S.4099 passed the New York Assembly and Senate and would ban killing contests in the state. The bill now awaits Gov. Kathy Hokul's signature. Urge her to sign the bill to save countless wild animal lives in New York!
Killing contests demonstrate a severe lack of respect toward the wild animals who are killed and the habitats where they live. Hundreds of animals are killed in single events for menial prizes and bragging rights. In the spring when many of these animals are raising their young, babies are orphaned and left to starve. After all this, the bodies of the deceased animals are thrown away, tossed in the garbage as worthless. These animals are dying for nothing.
These contests are not only cruel, but they are an ineffective way to manage animal populations as well. In fact, science has shown that the indiscriminate killing of coyotes actually leads to an increase in population growth in the long term.
Once the bill is enacted, New York will join eight other states that have already banned these contests: Arizona, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Mexico, Washington, and Vermont. Help New York become the ninth state to outlaw killing contests, and spare countless lives!
