California Residents: Support Bill to Protect Overwintering Habitat for Monarch Butterflies

Valid California address required to submit.

Populations of monarchs were once thriving, but these iconic butterflies are increasingly facing a number of threats that put their future survival in jeopardy. Now, there's a chance to help the western monarchs, who rely on habitat in California.

Lawmakers are considering the Coastal Monarchs Protection Act (AB 2254), which would protect their overwintering habitat. Urge the Senate to pass this important bill!

As recently as the 1990s, an estimated 1 billion monarchs made their way from Canada to Mexico, where they spend their winters sheltered by trees in the country's oyamel fir forests.

Millions of monarchs were believed to overwinter along California's coast, but the 29th annual Western Monarch Count led by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation recorded another historic low this year, with just over 12,000 at 249 sites. It's the third-lowest since the count started in 1997.

Sadly, these iconic butterflies remain threatened by the climate crisis, pesticides, and significant habitat loss. Since the 1980s, their population has declined by 95%, and at least 60 overwintering sites have been lost to development, fire, and tree cutting, while dozens more locations are currently threatened, putting them on the path to extinction.

The bill under consideration would develop policies to protect coastal habitat that monarchs rely on during their migration.

Decision maker: California State Senators

Subject: Support the Coastal Monarchs Protection Act (AB 2254)

As someone concerned with conservation, I’m writing to urge you to support the Coastal Monarchs Protection Act (AB 2254), which would protect overwintering habitat for these iconic butterflies.

Millions of monarchs were believed to overwinter along California’s coast, but the 29th annual Western Monarch Count led by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation recorded another historic low, with just over 12,000 at 249 sites. It’s the third-lowest since the count started in 1997.

This legislation would require local governments with monarch overwintering sites to develop and implement enforceable plans to protect them and encourage them to apply for grants through the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Rescue Program.

This much-needed legislation will give Western monarchs a chance to survive. I sincerely hope you will vote to support it.

Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,

Signed
