Oregon Residents: Ban Gruesome Coyote Killing Contests

Oregon Residents: Ban Gruesome Coyote Killing Contests

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

Coyote killing contests are nothing more than gory entertainment for hunters. Over 500 coyotes were brutally killed during these contests in Oregon last year. Thanks to HB 2728, Oregon has a chance to stop this violence. This bill moves to the House floor for a vote this week and then on to the Senate. Your voice can make a difference for Oregon's coyotes!

Killing contests award cash or prizes for the most animals killed in a short period of time. Hunters can use electronic calling devices that mimic young coyotes in distress to lure their victims within shooting range. Coyote pups may be orphaned and left to die. Even pregnant females are not spared, their bellies cut open to reveal babies inside covered with blood. Help us stop these barbaric contests!

Despite contest participants' claims this is wildlife management, these contests are just cruel killing sprees for entertainment. Studies show that killing contests don't reduce coyote populations and can increase them by disrupting pack structure. Coyote killing contests thrive on outdated views of wild animals as evil or as “pests,” while modern science heralds predators as members of keystone species who maintain healthy ecosystems.

Join this historic opportunity to pass HB 2728 and end this reign of terror against Oregon's coyotes! No animal deserves to die in bloody killing contests. We will fight to protect wild animals wherever any kind of animal killing continues, including hunting and killing of “game animals,” “pests,” predators, birds, mammals, and fish!
