Demand Prosecution of Animal Abusers Who Glued Hats on Birds

A disturbing pattern of animal cruelty involving the torture of innocent birds has been circulating on social media. Dating back to early December, animal abusers have maliciously glued hats to the heads of birds, with two of these incidents occurring in Las Vegas. These acts are blatant animal cruelty, and at least two birds have died as a result. Please join us in asking Nevada’s Clark County District Attorney to prosecute the individuals responsible and to stop similar crimes from occurring in the future.

In early December, several pigeons turned up with cowboy “hats” glued to their heads. Since then, a man admitted to gluing “sombreros” to seven pigeons’ heads in Reno, Nevada, and a baby pigeon had her feathers cut and glued to her head to mimic a Native American headdress in El Paso, Texas. Last week, again in Las Vegas, a group glued Make America Great Again “hats” to the heads of an entire flock of pigeons and produced a video to document the terrified birds.

The pigeons who have had “hats” glued to their heads are in imminent danger. The “hats” impair their vision, which makes them more susceptible to predators, and more prone to window strikes or being hit by cars, among other dangers. Our friends at Lofty Hopes, a pigeon rescue in Las Vegas, have been trying to trap the birds to remove the “hats.” So far, two pigeons have been rescued and had their “hats” removed. Unfortunately, both of the rescued birds later died. While the causes of death aren’t known for certain, the birds may have died from stress or inhaling glue fumes since pigeons have very fragile respiratory systems.

What You Can Do

Pigeons get a bad rap, with some ill-informed folks considering them pests. However, they are highly intelligent creatures. Pigeons mate for life and are excellent parents to their offspring, and they are every bit as worthy of protection from senseless cruelty as any other animal.

Nevada law (NRS 574.100) prohibits the torture or unjustifiable injury, maiming, mutilation, or killing of any living creature. Under this law, “cruelty” includes every act, omission, or neglect, whereby unjustifiable physical pain, suffering, or death is caused or permitted.

Please join us in asking Steve Wolfson, Clark County District Attorney, to take these acts of cruelty seriously and pursue animal cruelty charges against those responsible.
