President Biden: Designate 3 Proposed National Monuments to Save Wild Animals

Victory! This alert made a difference for animals! Learn more.

As one of three proposed sites, President Biden has stated that he intends to designate the Avi Kwa Ame region in Nevada as a National Monument. Avi Kwa Ame is an important habitat for wild animals like bighorn sheep, mule deer, and a plethora of bird species. However, Plum Island in Long Island Sound and Castner Range in Texas are two other locations that are also important to biodiversity and wild animals. Urge President Biden to officially designate Avi Kwa Ame as a National Monument, and also designate or take other measures to protect Plum Island and Castner Range.

There are currently over 1,300 endangered and threatened species in the United States. Habitat destruction and the climate crisis are major contributing factors to the loss of species both in the U.S. and across the globe. Just last year, the U.S. government declared 23 species extinct. Now more than ever it is important to ensure we are protecting and preserving spaces for wild animals across the country.

In Defense of Animals

Avi Kwa Ame is located in the Mojave Desert in Nevada and is where species like bighorn sheep and mule deer live, and it's considered a critical habitat for the Mojave desert tortoise. Designating this space as a National Monument would protect the natural habitat there from development and preserve this space for species facing the threat of extinction.

In Defense of Animals

Plum Island is sandwiched between the states of Connecticut and New York in Long Island Sound. The island is most famously known for its federal animal disease research facility but is also a refuge for nesting birds, including terns and the near-threatened piping plover.

In Defense of Animals

Castner Range is an area located in western Texas in the Franklin Mountains, which encompasses a critical portion of the Chihuahuan desert that serves as a wildlife corridor for animals like mule deer, mountain lions, and peccaries, a pig-like mammal species. Castner Range is also home to 27 wild animal species listed as endangered, threatened, or a species of concern.

In the face of increasing habitat destruction and disasters and changes related to the climate crisis, it is imperative that we act now to protect the habitats that are vital to the survival of members of hundreds of species.
