Octopuses are highly intelligent, sensitive animals who can learn, solve problems, explore their surroundings, and experience pain and distress. Yet industrial octopus-farming would confine these naturally curious, solitary animals in crowded, artificial environments for slaughter.
New York lawmakers have taken an important stand against this cruel industry that jeopodizes New York's watereways by passing S.7421B/A.8043C, legislation that would prohibit industrial octopus farming in the state. Now Gov. Kathy Hochul must ensure this protection becomes law.
Industrial octopus farming raises serious animal welfare and environmental concerns. Octopuses are carnivorous, meaning farming them would also require killing large numbers of other aquatic animals to feed them, while intensive industrial farming can contribute to pollution, disease, and other ecological harms, becoming a threat to New York's waterways.
There are currently no industrial octopus farms in New York. That makes this the perfect opportunity to stop this cruel and environmentally destructive industry before it can ever take hold.
This legislation has advanced thanks to the dedicated work of animal advocates across New York, including Voters For Animal Rights and other organizations and individuals who have worked to build support for banning industrial octopus farming. We are grateful to everyone who has helped move this important protection forward. Now we must keep up the pressure and urge Gov. Hochul to ensure the bill becomes law.

Subject: Please Call to Your Desk & Sign S.7421B/A.8043C to Ban Octopus Farming in New York
As a New York resident, I respectfully urge you to call to your desk and sign S.7421B/A.8043C into law and prohibit industrail octopus farming in our state.
Octopuses are remarkably intelligent and sensitive animals who can learn, solve problems, explore, and experience pain and distress. Confining these naturally curious, solitary animals in intensive farming systems for human consumption would cause needless suffering.
Octopus farming also raises serious environmental concerns. Because octopuses are carnivorous, raising them for food requires killing large numbers of other aquatic animals to feed them. Industrial octopus farming can also produce pollution and contribute to disease and other threats to surrounding ecosystems such as New York’s waterways.
New York does not currently have industrial octopus farms. By signing this legislation, you can prevent a cruel and environmentally harmful industry from becoming established in our state.
I am grateful to the animal advocates and organizations across New York who have worked to advance this legislation and build support for protecting octopuses from industrial farming. Their efforts, together with the strong bipartisan support this bill received in the Legislature, demonstrate that New Yorkers are ready to prevent this cruel industry from taking hold in our state.
Please call to your desk and sign S.7421B/A.8043C into law and ensure that industrial octopus farming has no future in New York.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Signed
