President Biden: Please Sign the Big Cat Public Safety Act Into Law!

People all over the world are eagerly waiting to welcome a huge victory for captive lions, tigers, and other big cats in the U.S. with the signing of the Big Cat Public Safety Act. After easily passing in the House back in July of 2022, the Act passed by unanimous consent in the Senate in December and is being readied to be sent to Biden's desk.

Once signed into law, this bill will prohibit the private possession of most big cats, excepting cheetahs whose members were unfortunately dropped during the process (pictured below, top right.) It will also make it illegal for exhibitors, such as circuses and zoos, to allow direct contact with cubs. This restriction will gradually phase out private "ownership" of the animals, thus ending "cub petting" in the United States. It will be illegal to force lions, tigers, and other big cat species into unnatural situations for entertainment and as a result, they will no longer be drugged, transported, and used as props for photo opportunities.

In Defense of Animals

We applaud both the House and the Senate for passing this very important animal welfare law to protect big cats and greatly appreciate the bipartisan effort it took to achieve this outcome. Thousands of members of the public and dozens of animal charities have campaigned for decades to see this day finally come.

Big Cat Rescue in Florida, made famous in Tiger King has tirelessly advocated for this bill along with organizations like In Defense of Animals. Thanks to your support, we have sent tens of thousands of emails to legislators over the years.

In Defense of Animals

This bill has enjoyed support from all, and President Biden has previously indicated his support of the Big Cat Public Safety Act. Now we must urge the President to swiftly sign the Big Cat Public Safety Act into law.
