We're so angry! The Council of Foster City is stubbornly pursuing its heartless plan to break the necks of resident Canada geese and goslings, despite considerable efforts to make councilmembers aware of effective nonlethal methods to resolve conflicts between geese and humans. It's time to call upon our state and federal elected officials to step in and stop this senseless massacre when effective, nonlethal options are readily available.
In Defense of Animals mounted a pressure campaign with over 15,000 letters, co-hosted 3 protests, issued a Gander Slander Citation for goose abuse, sent multiple media releases, and spoke at several council meetings to stop the council from killing geese. We also joined forces with the Animal Protection League of New Jersey, which presented nonlethal measures like habitat modification with native grasses and riparian buffers to the council during special meetings. We've done so much - we can't afford to lose now! Please take a moment to take action!
Two children even begged and pleaded with the mayor face-to-face asking her not to kill animals, but the Foster City Mayor and city council refused to listen to the public or experts from our National Goose Protection Coalition, who offered to fund nonlethal measures if implemented without lethal options.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier was instrumental in issuing a one million dollar grant to Foster City and can leverage her contacts to save the geese. U.S. Congress members do have the power to control U.S. agencies like the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Congresswoman Speier can use many non-statutory tools, not requiring legislative enactment, that may be used to influence and control agency action.
