Activists Rally Against Congressman Jared Huffman’s Support of Killing Endangered Tule Elk

On October 23, 2020, we joined forces with ForELK, The TreeSpirit Project, and Rancho Compasión to speak out in person against federal Congressman Jared Huffman’s (D- San Rafael) support for the National Park Service’s (NPS) plan to cruelly kill rare Tule elk and expand cattle ranching and other animal exploitative for-profit businesses inside Point Reyes National Seashore - a national park!

Tule elk are supposed to be protected, yet they are still in serious trouble because they’ve been trapped without safe access to adequate water for weeks stretching to months — and now the NPS has put targets on their backs to appease greedy public lands ranchers operating in this national park.

Over 75 dedicated citizens participated in a demonstration to make the public aware of Huffman’s support of this plan to kill off protected Tule elk and destroy the Point Reyes National Seashore just to increase the profits of ranchers and businesses.

As if dying of thirst after being fenced off from access to water wasn’t enough for Tule elk to contend with, on September 18, 2020, the NPS released its Final Environmental Impact Statement for Point Reyes National Seashore management, recommending “Alternative B,” which allows the shooting of rare Tule elk and extends the private leases of ranchers (who sold the land to the federal government decades ago) from 5 years to 20 years. If Alternative B is finalized, cattle ranchers would also be allowed to kill and “process” farmed animals on site, and add more animals to be killed to the Seashore including goats, sheep and chickens.

Tule elk are deliberately trapped behind fences while their ponds dry out and so they are dying of thirst.

Congressman Huffman, who is hypocritically a member of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis and Chair of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife, approves of all of this inside this national park—despite the potentially disastrous consequences and growing public opposition.

We align with thousands of American citizens and local organizations who support Alternative F which would phase out private ranches over the next five years, allowing thousands more acres for Tule elk to roam freely and increase this rare animal’s herds. It would also improve opportunities for park visitors to see and enjoy them, which is a major reason national parks were created.

Tragically, Congressman Huffman has shown unwavering support for ranches and dairies receiving more public subsidies as the demand for cruel, environmentally harmful animal products drops dramatically in today’s market.  We must ask ourselves: Why is Huffman so insistent on selling out endangered animals and our national parks? What does he stand to gain?
