Walmart: Animal Cruelty Stinks! Stop Selling Cruel Civet Cat Poop Coffee
Coffee might seem harmless, but one specific kind is causing immense cruelty to small cat-like creatures who are native to Asia and Southeast Asia. Civet cats are being snatched from their wild homes and forced into cages to eat nothing but coffee beans — many die a horrible death as a result. Tell Walmart to cut out the crap and stop peddling cruel cat-poo coffee!
In case you’ve never heard of it, this coffee, which is otherwise known as kopi luwak, civet coffee or just cat-poo coffee, is literally made from the feces of Asian palm civets.
When coffee is normally produced, the beans are separated from the fruit, fermented and roasted. But those making kopi luwak are using the gastrointestinal tracts of civets who eat the berries and ferment them during digestion before excreting the beans through their anuses.
The beans used to be gathered from wild civets, but producers quickly realized they could profit greatly from selling mass quantities of these beans and started factory farming civets throughout Southeast Asia.
Not only is this industry stealing civets from the wild and threatening their survival, but also thrusting them into cruel conditions. Civets used to produce kopi luwak are kept in small cages and denied everything they need to thrive, while essentially being force-fed coffee berries. This takes an extreme toll on their health, and many don’t survive.
The production methods of this coffee aren't just gross, they're incredibly cruel. There's simply no justification for Walmart selling it.
What YOU Can Do
1) Most industrial coffee production destroys native habitats. Choose bird-friendly brands to preserve precious wild spaces and save animals. Always pair your beverage with an animal-friendly plant-based milk or creamer such as oat, soy, or almond.
2) Call Walmart's CEO Doug McMillon to tell him to stop selling kopi luwak. There’s no excuse for this company to profit off of a product of suffering.
