WATCH: Victory! Mountain Lions in California Gain State Endangered Species Protection
We are thrilled to announce a major victory for mountain lions in California! On Thursday, February 12, 2026, the California Fish and Game Commission voted to extend critical protections to mountain lions across much of the state under the California Endangered Species Act.
This is a significant step forward for California’s iconic big cats, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of our dedicated community. The vote comes after years of advocacy, including efforts by the Center for Biological Diversity and Mountain Lion Foundation, with support from In Defense of Animals. Our partners’ petition and your powerful action helped bring this issue to the forefront.

In Defense of Animals supporters in California played an essential role, submitting 889 comments in support of this crucial recommendation. We want to take a moment to thank all the California supporters who signed our alert as your voices helped make this victory possible!

Mountain lions in Southern California and the Central Coast face numerous threats, including vehicle strikes, rodenticides, habitat fragmentation, and the risks of inbreeding. This vote will ensure that state agencies are legally mandated to take action to reduce these threats, improve habitat connectivity, and protect their essential habitats. The protection granted through CESA will give these vulnerable mountain lion populations the lifeline they desperately need.
Katie Nolan, In Defense of Animals' Wild Animals Campaigner, attended the meeting and spoke on behalf of these animals. Mountain lion P-22, especially with the iconic Hollywood Sign image, has drawn much-needed attention to their plight. His legacy has played a significant role in raising awareness, and now, this decision marks a pivotal moment in their protection.
Thank you for your continued support in safeguarding these majestic creatures. Together, we’re making a real difference for wildlife in California!
