URGENT: Wisconsin’s Wolves Are Under Attack, Stop the Fall Hunt!

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

Gray wolves were once cruelly hunted to near extinction and history is repeating itself. This year's bloodbath in Wisconsin has already claimed the lives of over 200 wolves, and 300 more have been sentenced to death during the upcoming hunt. If nothing is done, Wisconsin's gray wolves are doomed. Please urge the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to stop these brutal hunts before it is too late!

In the United States, gray wolves were the target of violent killing campaigns. With just a few remaining, the species was granted protections under the newly enacted Endangered Species Act in 1974. These protections allowed slow progress toward recovery, yet more time was needed to fully recover. Tragically, Endangered Species Act protections were stripped from the species in October 2020 under the Trump administration and blood has been shed ever since, undoing decades of recovery efforts.

Last February, at least 216 wolves were killed in less than 60 hours, nearly double the limit of 119 wolves. The hunt was prompted by a court order that had been issued by a county Circuit Court judge in Wisconsin after a hunting group had filed a lawsuit.

Wisconsin's Natural Resources Board has now voted to allow the slaughter of 300 wolves during the upcoming fall hunting season. This quota far exceeds the limit of 130 wolves proposed by the state's natural resources agency which includes biologists.

Hunters shouldn't be allowed to influence the courts with their own personal agendas. Ignoring science and pandering to their interests at the expense of Wisconsin's struggling wolf population cannot be allowed to continue.

Wolf hunting consists of trapping and killing wolves by violent, torturous methods. Wolves are gunned down and trapped by hunters in their natural habitats. They struggle to free themselves from traps before their killers return to shoot or beat them to death. Hunters' inability to shoot accurately often results in wolves suffering from bullet wounds throughout their bodies and blood loss for prolonged periods in harsh conditions.

Letter to Decision Maker(s) for reference:

Subject: Stop the Brutal Wolf Hunts in Wisconsin!

As someone who is concerned with wolf recovery, and one of over 250,000 In Defense of Animals supporters, I respectfully urge you to take urgent action to stop Wisconsin’s upcoming fall wolf hunt.

At least 216 wolves were massacred during February’s hunt, which prompted the hunt to end four days early. This number far exceeded the recommended quota of 119 wolves. Now, the DNR is allowing the slaughter of 300 wolves in the fall, despite the recommendation by state biologists to limit the number to 130 wolves.

By allowing the massacre of your state’s wolves, you are directly and indisputably undoing decades of recovery efforts and causing the all but certain eradication of gray wolves in Wisconsin.

Please cancel the fall hunt slated for November 6, 2021. Thank you for your attention to this crucial matter.

Sincerely,

Signed
