In Defense of Animals Offers $500 Reward in Dog Cruelty Case

Tallahatchie County Dog Shot and Killed

Grenada, Miss. (February 3, 2015) – In Defense of Animals (IDA), the international animal protection organization that operates Hope Animal Sanctuary (HAS) in Grenada, Mississippi, is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) who shot and killed Fat Boy, a Tallahatchie County beloved and friendly Rottweiler-mix dog found mortally wounded on December 22, 2014.

On Monday, December 22, Fred Fountain, Fat Boy’s guardian, received a call from a neighbor reporting that he’d heard at least one gun shot followed by the cry of a dog. He investigated and found his Mr. Fountain’s dog, Fat Boy, lying mortally wounded beneath his truck near 137 Cascilla Road. Mr. Fountain responded, confirming the dog was Fat Boy. Fat Boy was rushed to his veterinarian but died that afternoon.

X-rays of Fat Boy confirmed he had been shot in the shoulder by a shotgun and through the neck at close range by a rifle. The rifle slug entered his neck, breaking it, and exited the rear of his body.

“Sadly, we receive calls like this almost daily. Guardians have to understand that their loving companion animal may be an unwanted intruder on someone else’s property and large dogs are often feared, even when they are friendly. However, there’s no excuse for this violence. Neighbors need to be honest with one another when an animal is an annoyance or threat. Guardians must be responsible and keep their companions within the confines of their own property,” said IDA-HAS Director Doll Stanley.

The fine for shooting a dog is up to $1,500 and can be accompanied with jail time.

Anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible is urged to contact Hope Animal Sanctuary by calling or texting Director Doll Stanley (662) 809-4483 or Operations Manager Sharon Stone at (662) 466-0906.
