The Exotic Animal Trade in Missouri Must Stop

Next “Alternative Livestock Sale” has a Camel and a Zebra Ready to be Auctioned

The quarterly “Alternative Livestock Sale” that occurs at the Lolli Brothers Livestock Market in Macon, Missouri already has details up on its website regarding wild animals who will be auctioned off at its next sale this December. A camel and a zebra are among those listed for the pre-holiday auction.

This comes as no surprise, as the state of Missouri has few regulations on the exotic animal trade, leaving residents free to bid on whoever their greedy hearts desire.

Veterinarian Mark Lucas says that he would like to see more regulation in the state of Missouri. “They’re still wild,” he said. “And more importantly, even if they’re good 99 percent of the time, the 1 percent they’re not, they can kill you.”

Many have voiced their concern over wild animals escaping and injuring people, but perhaps what they should be really concerned about is people collecting these animals without any idea of how to properly take care of them, including understanding their emotional needs.

Adam Roberts of Born Free USA, commented by saying, “I think the most simple answer for both wildlife and people is a full prohibition nationwide of exotic animal ownership.”

We couldn’t agree more with you, Adam!
