for this most worthy international event to see how you can help, join, participate or learn more!

Friday, October 2, 2015 in Los Angeles
Saturday, October 3, 2015 in San Francisco
Sunday, October 4, 2015 in Sacramento

Each event will feature various speakers and participants in the elephant and rhino protection field, including IDA’s own Elephant and Cetacean Scientist, Dr. Toni Frohoff.

As the numbers of elephants and rhinos continue to dwindle in the wild, we need to take a stand now more than ever before. Let your voice be heard and speak up for these majestic beings before it is too late. The Global March for Elephants and Rhinos is taking place all over the world so even if you are not located in or near one of the cities that IDA is participating in, there still may be a March near you.

Elephants

  • Are being brutally slaughtered in Africa for their ivory
  • At least 35,000 African elephants were killed last year – that is 100 a day or 1 every 15 minutes
  • There are estimated to be only 300,000 Africa elephants left in the wild
  • At this rate African elephants may face extinction in as little as 10 years
  • Profits from the sale of ivory are often used to fund terrorist groups

Rhinos

  • The majority of rhinos live in South Africa where they are being exterminated by poachers
  • In 2007, 13 rhinos were killed – in 2013 over 1,000 were killed in South Africa alone, in 2014 that number has not let up averaging 2 poached each day
  • There are estimated to be only 25,000 rhinos left in the wild
  • Rhino horn is prized by traditional Asian medicine especially in Vietnam. Rhino horn contains nothing more than the same properties as human fingernails.
