Justice for Dog Dragged Behind Truck

Last week, a graphic video surfaced of Champ, a German Shepherd mix, being helplessly dragged behind a red pickup truck. In the video, two youths ride in the back of the truck laughing and videoing Champ while he struggles to free himself. In terror and agony, Champ finally collapses, goes limp, and is dragged on his side. If it weren’t for the intervention of good Samaritans, Champ may have died. He was taken to a veterinarian where he was treated and is now recovering with his rescuers.

70-year-old Willie Davis, of Houlka, Mississippi, was taken into custody by the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department in connection with the crime and has been charged with misdemeanor aggravated animal cruelty. Under Mississippi state law, the maximum penalty Davis faces is a fine of $2,500 and six months in prison.

Mississippi is not the only state in which animal cruelty occurs, but it is one of the few for which legislators and the powerful Farm Bureau flagrantly oppose legislation for the protection of animals.

We are asking Governor Phil Bryant to understand that animal cruelty is an issue of importance to civilized people, and it is in the interest of his state to foster an atmosphere of well-being for the families and individuals who would be attracted to his state for tourism and the establishment of businesses that bring revenue and jobs to the state.
