My name is Libertad, which is the Spanish word for “freedom” and my name aptly describes what I enjoy so profoundly. This photo was taken of me off the California coastline. Researchers, one of whom works with IDA, have been taking my picture for several years in efforts to protect me and my family and friends. I was very happy to see them after the oil spill earlier this year off the Santa Barbara coast – some of my companions suffered horribly – and a few died immediately after the spill. We still don’t know who else may be affected but, so far, I seem healthy. My pod and I are grateful to IDA for working so hard to tighten laws to protect me – and all ocean life – from future oil crises!
