2016 is upon us, and each year at this time, we release our list of 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants (now in its 12th year) to shed light on the dismal lives of elephants in zoos across North America. Topping the list this year and sharing the shameful number one spot in a three-way tie are: Dallas Zoo, Texas; Henry Doorly Zoo in Nebraska; and the Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas. Using ridiculous conservation claims, this ‘terrible trio’ has colluded to import 18 young elephants kidnapped from their mothers and extended families in Swaziland, Africa, to be put on display for the amusement of zoo visitors. Mountains of data demonstrate that captive elephants endure immense physical and psychological trauma. Despite zoos’ “conservation” claims, none of the elephants born at zoos will ever be returned to the wild, nor will they truly help animals in the wild. We’re not buying it, and neither should you.
