New York's Mute Swans Are Safe

Mute swans have gotten a two year respite from the predatory actions of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in the state of New York. Last week, Governor Cuemo finally signed Senator Tony Avella’s bill into law to save mute swans after two previous vetoes. This means that the DEC has to hold a two-year moratorium on taking any action against the swans, and that it must hold two public hearings before it can finalize any plans to “manage” the mute swan population. No killing will be allowed without specific evidence being provided showing damage caused by the swans, and even with evidence, options other than killing must be sought. We appreciate all our supporters who submitted our alert last year opposing the modified mute swan management plan submitted by the DEC, and Senator Avella for his tireless work to see this victory through.
