Last Chance to Say NO to Slaughter Marin County, California!

Last Chance to Say NO to Slaughter Marin County, California!

Animal advocates of Marin County, we desperately need you to show up next Monday.

At the last Planning Commission hearing, we were outnumbered by those in favor of opening slaughterhouses in Marin. We can’t let that happen again. There is too much at stake.

The next hearing is this February 13th, 10:30am, at the Marin County Civic Center: 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael, California.

At previous hearings held late last year, we successfully outnumbered those in favor of lifting the slaughterhouse ban, and our voices were heard -- loud and clear. So much so, that the commission was persuaded to keep the ban on large scale facilities, and due to the strong vocal opposition in particular for rabbits, they were also persuaded to exclude rabbits from small scale slaughter facilities.

While this is a start, those who are wise to this game know that there is always a catch, and here it is: the commission would like to issue permits which allow small scale facilities to slaughter chickens, ducks, and turkeys, and it would also like a loophole granted for mobile slaughter facilities to kill ALL animal species (including rabbits). So, as you can see, there is still a long way to go, and we must keep pushing. We’ve outnumbered them before, and with your help, we can do it again. This is our last opportunity before it heads to the board of supervisors, and it is vital that we’re heard.

While we wish that animal ethics were the most compelling defense to state during these hearings, the Planning Commission has made it clear that Marin’s economy and the wellbeing of the community is their first priority. Keeping this in mind, our defense must be strategic and address these issues of concern if we want the members of the Planning Commission to listen.

Our friends from Citizens Against Marin Slaughter have prepared some excellent talking points which address these issues. They have been uploaded to the Facebook event page here.

Please follow this event for the latest updates, and for tips to help you prepare your speech.

And please mark February 13th, 10:30am in your calendar and make every effort to be there!

To our fellow animal advocates in Marin, we hope you can make it!
