Patty & Unborn Puppies Saved in the Nick of Time

Patty, a young female black lab mix, found herself dumped at a municipal pound in a small town in the southern part of Mississippi. She was very obviously pregnant, and appeared about to give birth. Patty was scheduled for death the very next day. Paula Joyner, Director of East Mississippi Animal Rescue, learned of her plight and reached out to Sharon Stone, Operations Manager for In Defense of Animals' Hope Animal Sanctuary. We agreed to take this sweet dog who was about to die alone through no fault of her own. The responsibility was strictly that of her uncaring guardians who failed her when they failed to have her spayed.

Paula made arrangements with Animal Control and took the dog home with her until we could arrange to transport her the over two hours to our sanctuary. Ryan Anderson, the lead driver for Animal Rescue Front (ARF), volunteered to transport the dog to Madison, Mississippi where Sharon could meet the ARF transport which was in the process of sending other lucky puppies and dogs to new lives in the North East.

Later that same night, Patty was at Sharon’s home, all settled in a warm room of her very own with bedding, food and water. Around midnight Patty gave birth to her first puppy and by morning she had a total of seven beautiful puppies.

We believe that Patty waited until she felt safe before giving birth. Patty and her pups will remain in foster care at Sharon’s home until the pups are weaned and ready for homes of their own. Once the puppies are weaned, Patty will be spayed and she too will find the perfect home.

The old saying that "it takes a village” is certainly true in Patty’s story where three rescue groups came together to save this beautiful girl and her unborn babies. Without this teamwork, Patty would most certainly have been killed. In Defense of Animals is proud to be a part of the “village” working to save homeless and abused animals in Mississippi through our Hope Animal Sanctuary and we're grateful for our rescue friends in Mississippi that work tirelessly.

Patty and her babies will never have to worry about being hungry, cold or have the threat of being killed in a shelter, but there are countless thousands of dogs who still need our help. Please consider donating to In Defense of Animals and help us save more abandoned dogs just like Patty and her babies.
