Sharks Need Their Fins! Ban the Bloody Trade!

Sharks Need Their Fins! Ban the Bloody Trade!

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

Shark populations are in a global decline. Roughly 100 million sharks are killed each year, with well over half of their fins used for shark fin soup. Shark fins are often obtained by a process called finning, in which the fin is cut off of a live shark, and the shark is then thrown back in the water - condemned to a horrific and painful death. We must act now to stop these senseless mutilations and deaths!

While the United States has banned the practice of shark finning by domestic fisherman, it continues elsewhere. With 141 of 465 species of sharks listed by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as "near threatened," "vulnerable," "endangered," and even "critically endangered," shark fishing of all types is a threat to their long-term survival.

Two bills have been introduced to tackle the huge threat shark fin sales pose to global shark populations. In the Senate, S. 793, "The Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act of 2017," and in Congress H.R. 1456, "The Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act of 2017," would end the cruel shark fin trade. If these important bills pass, it will become illegal to buy, sell, transport, or even possess shark fins or products that contain them.

These bills will provide vital protections to curtail domestic shark fishing and the global trade in shark fins. Please act now for these incredible animals who are vital to the health of our oceans. Please call on your federal legislators to support shark conservation and stop the vicious attacks on sharks!
