Freedom Farms kicked off June at the 2026 Santa Cruz Veg Fest, connecting with animal advocates, curious newcomers, and families from across the Central Coast.

More than 100 attendees stopped by the Freedom Farms table to learn about In Defense of Animals and the latest initiatives at our Central Coast sanctuary. Freedom Farms Programs and Events Specialist Justin Cross — joined by his 9-year-old daughter, Nora, and rescue dog, Layla — shared updates on the sanctuary's recent work, including the rescue of nine turtles who had been used in turtle racing events at Brennan's Pub in Los Angeles.

Visitors also learned about past and upcoming programs at Freedom Farms, from hosting vegan innovator Miyoko Schinner during her recent book-signing tour to educational opportunities at the sanctuary and plans for a Vegan Food Week later this summer.

One of the day's most popular attractions invited attendees to help name the rescued turtles. The response exceeded expectations, with more than 75 creative name suggestions submitted. Nearly 50 people also shared their contact information to receive updates about Freedom Farms, future events, and the results of the turtle-naming contest, where nine names will be selected at random. Some of the fun name suggestions included Kurtle, Turbo, Mr. Fezziwig, Jackson, Stubbs, Seaweed, Bowser, and Odie (which also happens to be the name of the Freedom Farms horse).

Beyond the turtle naming activity, conversations throughout the day reflected the diversity and enthusiasm of the vegan community. Some visitors were longtime animal advocates and supporters of In Defense of Animals, while others were exploring ways to reduce their consumption of animal products or transition to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. To that end, many visitors took home our newest Vegan Starter Guide and educational materials highlighting In Defense of Animals' work to protect animals and promote compassionate living.

Beyond the Freedom Farms booth, Santa Cruz Veg Fest featured an impressive lineup of vegan and vegetarian food and beverage vendors, as well as nonprofit organizations dedicated to protecting animals and the environment. Combined with beautiful weather and a positive, energetic atmosphere, the event provided a wonderful opportunity to build community, share resources, and inspire compassion.

Freedom Farms' 44-acre sanctuary is home to rescued cows, peacocks, a horse, a donkey, cats, turtles, and native wildlife. Saturday's event demonstrated just how many people are eager to support a more compassionate future for animals.
