Love in Africa - Chimpanzee Style

Love in Africa - Chimpanzee Style

The stunning Miss Ava, age 14, was orphaned as an infant when poachers killed her mother, and she has lived at In Defense of Animals - Africa’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center since she was rescued in 2005. She is very popular among the males in her group of six and has admirers from afar too. You will be surprised to find out why Miss Ava is so popular! The males in Ballas' group of seven can catch glimpses of her from particular spots along the edges of their forested enclosure.

Why is she so popular? Female chimpanzees advertise their fertility by means of sexual swelling, and Ava's swelling is particularly pronounced. Most chimpanzee males are highly attracted to females when their sexual swellings are the largest, and compete for the opportunity to mate with the female with the largest ones.

As a founding member of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), Sanaga-Yong uses reversible contraception. Despite an extensive search over several years, we have yet to find a suitable reintroduction/release site in Cameroon. Unless the day comes when babies could be born free, Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center will prevent reproduction and dedicate all of our resources to providing the best care possible for our rescued chimpanzees.
