Take Action: Say No to Flawed “Humane” Labeling System

New rules proposed by the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service  (FSIS), would allow meat producers to use slogans like “Raised With Care” or “Humanely Raised” simply by making up whatever they want and submitting their own definitions! Even worse, they will maintain the right to use those labels by self regulating!

In a statement to the Huffington Post, the FSIS acknowledged that under its new proposed rule, products could be labeled “Humane” even if animals were raised on standard factory farms, where animals are commonly subjected to prolonged extreme confinement and horrific body mutilations including unanesthetized castration, debeaking and dehorning.

This is extremely misleading for consumers, and an absolute betrayal of farmed animals.

A conflict of interest as large as this needs to be exposed, and rectified.

If not, it will enable a disgustingly unethical marketing scheme where consumers are fooled into paying more for a label with zero guarantees or accountability for what that label states.

The FSIS should not allow meat producers to define their own labels such as “Raised With Care” or “Humanely Raised”, nor should producers be allowed to self regulate those claims. This is a huge conflict of interest, one which will result in grossly misleading consumers to pay more for a label which has absolutely no lawful meaning and zero accountability. I reject this new rule and it needs to rectified.
