Urge the U.S. Department of Transportation to support a wildlife crossing at Liberty Canyon in California

Habitat fragmentation — the division of large, continuous habitats into smaller, isolated patches — is one of the principle threats to species across the planet.

It is a local, as well as a global, threat. On Monday the 10th of August, mountain lion P-32, collared — like Cecil the Lion — by the Park Service to better understand big cat dispersal, became only the most recent lion to be killed while attempting to cross one of California’s freeways.

Scientists and park rangers have been calling for the creation of wildlife corridors to assist bobcats, mountain lions, and other species when migrating between protected areas. Wildlife corridors are especially crucial for big cats who, by nature, roam vast distances in search of food and mates.

In addition to their inborn right to existence, big cats offer us the satisfaction of knowing such beauty and sublimity still roam the earth. All that they ask for, in return, is to be left alone.

Who, if not us, will stand up to ensure that big cats and other species are able to travel unmolested across the protected areas we have set aside for their private lives?
