WATCH: Online Cat Torture Victims Honored at Global Protest & Memorial
On May 18, 2025, we held an international day of action with 23 protests in 13 countries urging the Chinese government to investigate online cat torture and pass anti-cruelty animal laws to prosecute perpetrators. We honored the victims with memorials to share their tragic stories and ensure they did not die in vain.
We helped form a global coalition of animal advocacy groups to stop online cat torture, investigate cat perpetrators, and host events to raise awareness. Cat torture videos surfaced on social media in 2023 and have increased exponentially since then. Data shows an alarming 300% more cat torture cases between December 2024 and early 2025, often originating from China, which doesn’t have animal cruelty laws.
The protest and memorial in San Francisco and Los Angeles was meaningful and moving.
The memorial element of the action was inspired by a Chinese activist who described Qingming, Ancestors Day, a national holiday and traditional festival to remember deceased family members after the spring equinox by cleaning their graves, burning Joss paper (Jin Zhi), and offering food. A banner with thousands of cat victims’ faces and artistic renderings of several victims was displayed and used in the ceremonies.
Activists in San Francisco hold protest signs and a memorial banner showing actual cat victim’s faces.
In San Francisco, former California State Assemblymember Paul Fong gave a rousing speech outside the Consulate-General of China to mourn the growing number of cats brutally killed by “crush video” rings. Participants symbolically cleaned the victims images on the memorial banner to represent their gravesites and give them tributes for Chinese Ancestor’s Day.
Human and animal rights activists unite in Los Angeles to protest cat torture and memorialize the victims.
In Los Angeles, Chinese-American human rights and animal activists shared moving stories of animal abuse and rescue during the memorial ceremony to honor cat torture victims held outside the Chinese Embassy. Each participant offered a flower and a blessing to rest in peace.
The memorials featured rituals to grieve and heal as a community.
Thank you for honoring the memory of these innocent cats who died in horror and pain. We send them our love and surround their spirits with healing energy. We will not forget their precious souls. We will stop cat torture groups in their names.
Stay tuned for more actions to raise awareness about this sadistic cat abuse. Our coalition has sophisticated tools to track down cat criminals and bring them to justice with the help of government officials. Your voice can make a difference!
