Great news! Your calls and emails are helping to move California’s Iconic African Species Protection Act— SB 1487 closer to final passage. This Act will prohibit the possession and imports of eleven hunted species of African wildlife into California after January 1, 2019. This includes lions, elephants, rhinoceroses and giraffes who have been killed by trophy hunters. 

The California Senate passed the bill, which moved it to the Assembly committees for hearings. After passing two committees, SB 1487 awaits a hearing date for the final Assembly Appropriations Committee vote. Now is the time to call and email the Appropriations Committee to make sure it passes!

This bill is fiercely opposed by Safari Club International, the National Rifle Association and the trophy hunting lobby. African wild animals need you to take immediate action! This bill is necessary given the Trump Administration’s attitude toward wild animals and the environment. The Administration recently decided not to protect African wildlife from trophy hunters who pay obscene amounts of money to kill and then ship the lifeless trophies to their homes as if they were souvenirs.  

What YOU Can Do

As a California resident, your voice makes a real difference. Please call members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee to get this bill passed. With this landmark legislation, you will help California become the first state in the nation to protect African elephants, African lions, leopards, black rhinoceroses, white rhinoceroses, giraffes, Jentink’s duikers, plains zebras, mountain zebras, hippopotamuses, and striped hyenas from bullets and arrows. You do not need to be a registered voter, just a resident of California. 

CALL each Assembly Appropriations Committee member.

Review the list of seventeen members on the Appropriations Committee. If you recognize one of them as representing your district, be sure to call (and email) this representative specifically. Otherwise, please take the time to call as many of them as you can.

When a staff person in a Committee member’s office answers, politely say something like the following:

"As a California resident, I urge you to vote yes on SB 1487, the California Iconic African Species Protection Act. As a key California representative, I am asking you to protect these eleven species of African wildlife on my behalf and for wildlife conservation.”
