Demand End to Petco Betta Fish Killing
Every year, millions of betta fish are neglected and suffer in Petco retail stores. After enduring harrowing journeys from breeding facilities, many of them get sick and die slow, painful deaths. Please join us in urging Petco to stop the abuse of betta fish!
Most betta fish sold by Petco and other pet store chains are born on breeding farms. These farms are the underwater equivalent of puppy mills and house fish in small containers of putrid water. When the fish are ready to be sold, they are carelessly packed into tiny bags that are pumped with chemicals. They are starved for days during shipment and become panic-stricken from the tight confinement. The fish frantically thrash around their plastic prisons as they desperately try to escape. Many die from this treatment before reaching pet stores.
At Petco stores, betta fish live in bowls without filtration or heating. Bettas are tropical fish. They can tolerate cool temperatures for substantial periods of time, but they need heat to stay healthy and comfortable. Many fish arrive at stores with swim bladder problems, fin rot, and other illnesses. They often develop sicknesses from improper care at the stores. Sick fish are rarely given veterinary care and are left to languish indefinitely. Petco recklessly markets betta fish as “starter pets” despite the complex care they require and the lack of regard this term promotes. Consequently, many of them die in the hands of customers who cannot fulfill their needs.
Petco has already stopped selling dogs, cats, and rabbits on ethical grounds. Betta fish, and all other fish, deserve the same compassion and consideration. Science has conclusively demonstrated that fish are capable of feeling pain and fear. They are also highly intelligent animals who can count, use tools, and remember the faces of group members.
Why should they deserve any less consideration than anyone else?

Here’s an example of what you can say:
Hi, my name is ______, and I respectfully urge Petco to stop selling betta fish. Petco’s betta fish are born on breeding farms, which are the underwater equivalent of puppy mills. They are starved and confined to cramped bags during transport to Petco stores and live in small bowls without heating or filtration in stores. Many become seriously ill and are usually denied veterinary care. Fish are sentient, feeling beings, and treating them this way is unacceptable.
