Berkeley: Author Event for Censored Landscapes: The Hidden Reality of Farming Animals
In Defense of Animals and the Animal Rights Center in Berkeley are thrilled to welcome artist, writer, and activist Isabella La Rocca González for a reading, presentation, Q&A, and book signing for her eye-opening work, Censored Landscapes: The Hidden Reality of Farming Animals. This book combines striking photography, in-depth research, and creative non-fiction to reveal the dark truths of animal agribusiness.
Without graphic imagery, Censored Landscapes exposes the hidden realities of animal farming through La Rocca González’s hauntingly beautiful photographs. Her portraits of the animals who are imprisoned within these facilities emphasize the scale of suffering and heinous brutality that farmed animals endure, and the erasure of their sentience, beauty, and individuality. With a blend of essays, rigorous inquiry, and poetry, La Rocca González offers a factual account of the most abusive and oppressive industry of our time, with contributions from poets, activists, and scholars.
Isabella La Rocca González, based in the United States, is the daughter of immigrants. She strives to reconcile values from her indigenous Mexican roots with her European heritage. Awards for her work include the Ferguson Grant from the Friends of Photography. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally, including a solo show at the Center for Photography in Woodstock. Her creative nonfiction works have been published in various journals and her screenplay, Fugue 9, was chosen as a finalist for the 2008 Sundance Screenwriters Lab.
Censored Landscapes prompts readers to examine the complex connections between animal farming, environmental devastation, worker exploitation, and broader societal issues. It challenges us to confront uncomfortable truths with empathy, urging action for a more just and compassionate world.
This vital photographic project not only informs but illustrates the profound, oppressive impact of animal farming on our lives. It exposes the deception and brutality against animals, as well as the environmental crises and social inequality they fuel—calling for both personal and systemic change. Inviting reflection and action, Censored Landscapes urges readers to feel for the animals, confront what's hidden, and take action to help them.
