California: New Action Needed to Save Animals with Plant-Based School Lunches!
Every day countless animals suffer from extreme confinement, painful mutilations, and prolonged deaths in the factory farms and slaughterhouses which dot this nation’s landscape. Many of them spend months, or even years, confined to tiny metal cages where they are unable to turn around or fully stretch out their limbs. If only a small fraction of California’s public schools started to serve plant-based meals, millions of animals could be reprieved of this cruel and unnecessary torment.
California’s bill to incentivize public schools to serve plant-based lunches passed the Assembly and has now moved to the Senate. If instituted, this legislation could spare the lives of over 6 million animals per month! Please join us in urging the Senate Education Committee to vote “yes” on AB 479!
AB 479 will also improve the health of our state’s children. Decreased consumption of animal protein can assist with weight loss and reduce one’s chances of developing a host of chronic diseases including cancer and atherosclerosis (a buildup of plaque in our arteries which causes heart attacks and strokes).
What You Can Do
1) Make a call. Calling is one of the most effective actions you can take for animals. Legislators may be able to filter or ignore emailed letters, but they can't avoid phone calls as easily. Call your state senator by clicking on the link below, entering your zip code, and clicking on the California tab.
Here’s an example of what you can say:
“Hello, my name is X. As your constituent, I am urging you to vote “yes” on AB 479 to provide public schools with a financial incentive to include plant-based foods in school lunches. Serving plant-based foods will not only spare the lives of countless animals, but it will also make our state’s children healthier and help save the environment. Please vote “yes” on AB 479. Thank you for your full consideration of this much-needed legislation.”
2) Good news! We don’t need to wait for lawmakers to act to bring about positive change for animals. We can all take action by transitioning to a plant-based diet. Learn how and where to begin by downloading our free and simple starter guide today:
3) After your calls, please send our follow-up letter by filling out the fields on this page. If you have a son or daughter who attends a California public school, please try to personalize the letter to explain how this legislation will be personally beneficial.
