New Jersey Residents: Ask Governor Murphy to End The Cruel Confinement of Mother Pigs & Baby Cattle

New Jersey Residents: Ask Governor Murphy to End The Cruel Confinement of Mother Pigs & Baby Cattle

Victory! This alert is no longer active because on July 26, 2023, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed this bill into law!

It is an unfortunate and common practice in factory farming to restrict the movement of mother pigs and calves in gestation and veal crates until they are slaughtered. These animals spend their entire lives immobilized and in extreme discomfort all because humans consume their flesh. But now, New Jersey is one step away from banning this horrible practice in the state!

Twin bills, A.1970 and S.1298 passed the New Jersey Assembly and Senate with your help, and now the bill to ban the crates is on Gov. Phil Murphy's desk awaiting his signature. Ask him to show his support for this bill by signing it into law!

Gestation crates are an average of 7 feet by 2 feet and restrict a sow's ability to move while she is pregnant. Pigs are highly intelligent and social animals, and they suffer from severe physical and psychological stress from not engaging in natural behaviors. This leads to stereotypic behaviors, such as biting on bars.

Veal crates confine male calves recently taken from their mothers to a space that is only 2 feet by 2.5 feet. These crates are intentionally designed this way to prevent muscle development, which is how the veal industry is supplied with tender baby cattle flesh.

In Defense of Animals

This pig's mother spent her entire life confined in a crate she couldn't turn around in.

Gestation and veal crates are becoming outdated as the world has begun to move away from supporting these cruel practices. So far, gestation crates have been banned in 10 U.S. states, as well as Canada and the European Union, while veal crates have been banned in nine. Many corporations, including McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Carl's Jr., Hardee's, Kroger, Denny's, and more are also prohibiting gestation crates in their supply chains.

In Defense of Animals

Male calves are murdered as babies for their flesh after spending their entire short lives not being able to move and drinking milk substitute so that humans can consume the milk instead.

Once the governor signs A.1970, or when 45 days from when the bill passed the Senate, New Jersey will be the next state to outlaw the cruel practice of confining sows and calves, bringing our country one step closer to a place where other animals do not suffer for the benefit of humans.
