World Farmed Animals Day is celebrated annually on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday to recognize and honor the unimaginable suffering of farmed animals, who are among the least-protected animals globally. Farmed animals are denied the same legal protection from cruelty as dogs or cats despite sharing the same capacity to suffer.

Chickens are intelligent, social and affectionate animals who form close bonds with one another and mourn the loss of friends. Unfortunately, they are among the most abused farmed animals who suffer intensive confinement and painful mutilation beginning on the day they hatch.

Millions of egg-laying hens in the U.S. suffer in this industry, particularly in battery cages where they cannot move around or spread their wings their whole lives. Overcrowded and deprived of everything natural to them, pecking becomes a common method of coping with the unbearable stress. As a result, the painful procedure of debeaking — slicing off half of their sensitive, nerve-filled beaks — is standard practice on most farms.

Every year in the US, over 300 million baby male chicks are also killed in hatcheries by the egg industry because they are deemed worthless; they cannot lay eggs, and their particular breed is not profitable to raise for meat production.
