New York: Stop Creating Virus-Breeding Hotspots by Butchering Animals!
The initial human victims of the novel coronavirus are widely believed to have been connected to a live animal market in Wuhan, China, where thousands of terrified animals are slaughtered on-demand in depraved and unsanitary conditions. Tragically, these cruel, potentially catastrophic markets do not only exist overseas. Did you know that more than 80 live animal markets also operate within the city of New York?
Twin bills, A.10399/ S.08291 have been introduced by Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal and Senator Luis Sepúlveda to shut down these filthy markets and prevent new operational licenses from being issued. We must take immediate action to pass this legislation to close cruel animal markets in New York, which are proven breeding grounds for deadly viruses and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
“As policymakers, we have a responsibility to respond to this crisis by doing everything in our power to prevent the next pandemic. Closing New York’s live animal markets, which operate in residential neighborhoods and do not adhere to even the most basic sanitary standards, until we determine whether they can be made safe, is a vital first step,” said Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption and despair across the globe, and we remain vulnerable to future crises if we do not take action to tackle the root causes,” said State Senator Luis Sepúlveda.

What You Can Do
1) Calling is one of the most effective actions you can take for animals. Legislators may be able to filter or ignore emailed letters, but they can't avoid phone calls as easily.
Please call your one state senator and one state representative to urge a statewide ban on live animal markets by clicking here, entering your zip code, and select the New York tab.
When you call, please state your name and city/town of residence. If you are represented by Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal or Senator Luis Sepúlveda, please thank them for introducing this crucial legislation. For all other legislators, here’s an example of what you can say:
During this public health crisis, I respectfully urge you to address the connection between the COVID-19 outbreak and live animal markets by cosponsoring twin bills A.10399/ S.08291. If passed, this legislation would immediately shut down the 80+ live animal markets throughout New York which are proven breeding grounds for deadly viruses and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Thank you for your time.
2) Until we stop eating animals and acknowledge that forcing them into unnatural environments is a breeding ground for deadly diseases, COVID-19 will become yet another animal-borne illness that we could have prevented. Please download our free Veg Starter Guide today: idausa.org/vegguide
3) Send our automated letter to your legislators by filling out the form on this page. Personalization, especially in the opening sentence, is highly encouraged.
