Stop Big Dairy from Stomping on Ethical Competitors

Stop Big Dairy from Stomping on Ethical Competitors

Big dairy is at it again. This time, it’s put all of its might behind an outrageously desperate proposal — which, unbelievably, the FDA is taking seriously — banning plant-based foods from carrying the term “milk.” We can’t let the dairy industry continue to manipulate the market and stomp on its plant-based competitors

Soy milk. Almond milk. Cashew milk. “Nut Milks Are Milk, Says Almost Every Culture Across the Globe,” proclaims a recent headline from Smithsonian Magazine. The article continues, “Linguistically speaking, using ‘milk’ to refer to the ‘the white juice of certain plants’ (the second definition of milk in the Oxford American Dictionary) has a history that dates back centuries.”

So, what’s really going on here? The dairy industry’s claim, which of late is being repeated by Scott Gottlieb, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner, is that putting non-dairy and dairy milks under the same umbrella term tricks consumers into thinking the two are nutritional equals.

However, Marion Nestle, Emerita of Nutrition Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University confirms that, “People who choose not to drink it can get those nutrients from other sources quite easily.”

Of course, the dairy industry is concerned with one thing and one thing only: fighting to keep its market share which is rapidly shrinking.

We’ve come to expect this type of behavior from the dairy industry, but Scott Gottlieb, and the other employees of the FDA ostensibly serve the American people, and this ban being considered is an action that will impact the American public and be judged by the world at large.

Please join us in encouraging the FDA to make the right call by rejecting the dairy industry’s attempt to smear its ethical plant-based competitors!

What You Can Do

1. Plant-based milks are vastly more compassionate to our fellow sentient beings, and far less detrimental to the planet and our health. Take the dairy-free challenge today at www.dairyfreechallenge.com

2. Send our letter to the FDA urging it to rule on the side of common sense by allowing plant-based products to continue to be labeled as “milk.”
