Stop Dairy Industry From Forcing Milk Down School Kids' Throats

Recently, the House of Representatives was presented with H.R. 4101, deceptively named The School Milk Nutrition Act of 2017, a bill designed to “reverse declining milk consumption in schools.” This would allow the dairy industry to force its antibiotic ridden, obesity-promoting products on children! We can't allow this flagrant abuse of power to be legalized.

Big Dairy claims that its benevolent motivation is children’s health, yet scientific evidence, including that of the Harvard School of Public Health shows that dairy products offer little if any protection for bone health, and can stimulate the release of insulin and insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) which progresses certain cancers. There is also growing evidence that consuming dairy increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, asthma, Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease.

But health concerns are not the only issue here, because dairy production is also terrible for the environment. Dairy farms produce staggering quantities of waste and greenhouse gases — polluting soil, air, water and contributing to climate change. In fact, a single dairy farm with 2,500 cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of 411,000 people!

Dairy production is also unspeakably cruel to animals. Like all mammals, cows will only produce milk after giving birth. After enduring nine long months of pregnancy, a dairy cow's newborn is taken away from her almost immediately after giving birth to be slaughtered or used. Cows are social animals with strong bonds to their calves and are known to bellow and cry out for many days after this heartbreaking separation, longing for their babies to be returned. This constant cycle of forced impregnation continues year after year until her milk production declines. At that point, she too is sent to the slaughterhouse.

Imagine all the cows who wouldn't have to be abused and slaughtered to simply provide milk for a school lunch. Imagine how many natural resources could be saved if this bill didn’t go ahead.

It’s time to stop lining the pockets of the dairy industry at the expense of children’s health, the environment and animals.

We cannot let this bill be passed!
