Demand Justice For Cat Stoned Almost To Death By Cruel Neighbor

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

A Maryland man was caught on surveillance footage attempting to stone his neighbor's 1-year-old cat Grayson to death causing severe injuries, but nothing has been done to hold him accountable. Urge the chief of the Baltimore County Police Department and the state attorney to ensure a just prosecution.

In Defense of Animals

On May 22, 1-year-old Grayson, who is an indoor cat belonging to Linda Smithery's daughter, had somehow gotten outside and hid underneath her vehicle. Tragically, when they later discovered him, he was covered in blood and had sustained serious injuries.

A Ring camera had caught their neighbor Joseph Olunwa repeatedly throwing rocks at Grayson under the car as he tried to hide earlier that morning.

Grayson's guardians called 911 to report the incident and stated that they were taking him to the Veterinary Emergency Group for treatment, where it was found he suffered from multiple injuries to his eyes and mouth and had a broken jaw requiring surgery, which was all estimated to cost upwards of $12,000.

An officer was also dispatched to follow up, but Olunwa, who expressed no remorse and has continued to engage in threatening behavior toward Smithery and her daughter, has not been arrested. While a warrant was issued, it was not filed to reflect the serious nature of this crime.

We've added this video to reflect that there's finally been an arrest

Subject: Man Who Stoned Neighbor’s Cat Causing Life-Threatening Injuries Deserves Maximum Sentencing

I am writing to support the arrest and prosecution of Joseph Olunwa who was caught on surveillance footage stoning Grayson, a cat who belonged to his neighbor Linda Smithery.

Olunwa’s actions resulted in serious injury to Grayson, which veterinary records state included severe damage to his eyes and a broken jaw. The cost for treatment is already over $2,000 and Grayson still needs more intensive care and a jaw surgery estimated to cost $10,000 alone. Olunwa also caused damage to Smithery’s car, which Grayson was hiding under.

This disturbing incident has caused severe trauma to Smithery’s daughter, who was already grieving the loss of her father, and has left them in a living situation where they don’t feel safe. It’s incredibly disappointing that members of the community are left to deal with the aftermath of situations like this, while little is done to address criminal behavior.

Olunwa must be held accountable for the harm he caused. He should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent for his callous actions, for which he has expressed no remorse, and be mandated to undergo a mental health evaluation and treatment. He should also be mandated to reimburse veterinary costs and not be allowed near animals ever again.

I hope to learn that your office is taking steps to address this incident and will be following up. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,

Signed
