WATCH: Victory! Justice Served for Inexcusably Neglected Horses

We are thrilled to share with you the appropriate sentencing of James Cable, who was convicted of failing to provide sustenance for his horses, who were found nearly starved to death.

On May 24, 2023, we seized two neglected horses in Oakland, Mississippi, in cooperation with the Tallahatchie County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Jerry “Bubba” Williams worked with our Justice for Animals Senior Campaigner Doll Stanley to arrange safe haven, care, and transport them.

Mississippi Horses and In Defense of Animals often collaborate to care for imperiled horses. The horses were accepted by Mississippi Horses, vetted by Dr. Thomas Abernethy, and are in recovery. The stallion, now named Spunky, is recovering well. Lyla, the mare, was nearly past recovery, but appears to have gained some weight and vigor. The two are in a plush pasture with exemplary care and prescribed feedings.

That wasn’t all. Tallahatchie County Justice Court Judge Steve Ross ordered Cable to pay $1,000 per horse, the maximum fine under § 97-41-1 . Cruelty to living creatures, plus court costs of $185. This was a direct response to our filing of the criminal affidavit and the presentation of our evidence.

Individuals who place animals in intrinsically harmful circumstances aren’t just negligent; they are culpable for their cruel actions, and we fight for justice for their victims. There is no excuse for negligently disregarding the welfare of an animal.

In Defense of Animals has served Mississippi for 30 years, working with citizens, humane organizations, law enforcement, and the court system to rescue and seek justice for mistreated animals.
