Proposed Wild Horse Holding Facility Will Be Mustang Torture

Proposed Wild Horse Holding Facility Will Be Mustang Torture

The Bureau of Land Management is moving at an unprecedented speed to capture and remove America’s wild horses and burros from our public lands. To facilitate this, the BLM has proposed a new holding facility near Winnemucca, Nevada, that will be torturous for these freedom-loving iconic animals without giving the public a meaningful chance to weigh in.

In its haste to accommodate the many thousands of additional wild horses snatched from their ranges, the proposal for the new facility had only a 15-day public comment period.

With such a shortened time frame, we could not alert you to convey your mortification regarding this cruel plan. In Defense of Animals did submit our opposition to the proposed facility, which would allow up to 4,000 wild horses confined to 100 acres in dry lot pens. These crowded, unsheltered, and filthy pens would constitute torture for these beautiful animals, who are not used to confinement of any kind.

The horses would not have any space to move around, and the tight confinement would quickly destroy their mental well-being. Diseases and injuries would mount up because the plan calls for the pens to be “cleaned” only two to four times per year!

The horses would be packed together, standing in mounds of manure and urine for months, having to eat and sleep under these conditions.

Only the “special care” pens would have any shelter from the Nevada elements of extreme desert heat, snow, sleet, and wind. The vast majority of the 4000 horses would have no protection at all.

The BLM has become a rogue agency, fabricating “emergencies” and loopholes to get around any regulatory requirements to do whatever it wants, and America’s wild horses and burros are paying a heavy price, often with their very lives.

Please help us to save wild horses and burros! Find out what you can do by visiting our Wild Horses and Burros campaign.
