New York: Ban Cruel Wildlife Killing Contests!

New York: Ban Cruel Wildlife Killing Contests!

Victory! This alert made a difference for animals! Learn more.

Brutal wildlife killing contests that result in the massacre of many animals, including bobcats, foxes, and coyotes, for cash and prizes are still taking place in more than 40 states — but New York could be next to ban them. Urge your New York senator to support S.6643 to put an end to wildlife killing contests today!

Participants engaging in these organized contests often use high-tech equipment and unconscionable tactics, such as playing electronic cries of coyotes to lure out other concerned coyotes to shoot them with rifles. After the bloodbath, participants are given prizes based on the size of the animal they slaughtered or the number of animals killed within a specified time period. Participants then typically discard the bodies of the dead animals as though they were nothing more than trash. We must act now to ban these heartless competitions!

The killings of these animals can leave their offspring abandoned and exposed to predators, harsh conditions, and they may starve to death. Predators often control other species within a given habitat. The mass killing of predators has a significant impact on the ecosystem and throws populations of many, often smaller species, out of control. Killing contests are not an ethical or effective wildlife management strategy.

Most killing contests are not widely promoted to the general public to avoid opposition. Making these contests even more disturbing is the fact that many invite children as young as ten years of age to participate, teaching them that killing innocent beings for fun is acceptable behavior that they will be rewarded for.

In Defense of Animals

No animal deserves to die in bloody killing contests. Eight states have already acted to ban or restrict these cruel and wasteful events; it is now New York's turn to join the list!
