California Residents: Please Urge Governor Newsom to Protect Migratory Birds!

The California Migratory Bird Protection Act (AB 454) has passed through the California State Assembly and Senate, and is now one step away from becoming law! AB 454, a bill introduced by Assemblymember Ash Kalra, would protect thousands of species of migratory birds who travel to and from California’s wetlands and forests via the Pacific Flyway.

This much-needed bill would close a loophole in state law which could be interpreted to defer the management of the state’s migratory birds to the federal government. The Trump administration is working to weaken the long-standing Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), a federal bill that has protected migratory birds throughout the country for over 100 years. Please urge Governor Newsom to sign AB 454 into law to protect migratory birds!

With the Trump administration’s approval of offshore drilling off of the coast of California and the rest of the country, the incidental killing of over 1,000 species of protected birds by Big Oil is looming. Past oil spills, such as the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico which started in 2010, killed millions of birds and obliterated marine habitats. For this violation of the MBTA, BP Oil was fined $100 million. Now, the administration is making moves to dismantle the MBTA to allow the mass killing of protected bird species without consequence.

This intentional weakening of federal law signals an urgent need to ensure the state manages and protects migratory birds to the fullest extent possible.
