BREAKING NEWS: Neiman Marcus Goes Fur-Free After Decades of Pressure

BREAKING NEWS: Neiman Marcus Goes Fur-Free After Decades of Pressure

DALLAS (July 30, 2021) — In Defense of Animals has welcomed a major win for animals from luxury retailer and long-time seller of animal fur, Neiman Marcus, which has committed to go fur-free by 2023. Neiman Marcus Group's new policy eliminates animal fur from Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman stores and websites, and will shut down the fur salons at both divisions.

“For decades, animal activists and organizations have campaigned with In Defense of Animals to see the day Neiman Marcus stopped selling fur, and we are tremendously proud to be a part of the effort,” Julie Massa, Fur Campaigner for In Defense of Animals. “Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and TJ Maxx have now joined the ever-expanding group of compassionate retailers, making it clear that fur is ugly, outdated, and cruel. No animal should die for fashion, and we urge all states to follow in the footsteps of Neiman Marcus and other major retailers by passing legal bans on all fur sales.”

In Defense of Animals has campaigned to end fur sales at Neiman Marcus for decades. Thousands of its supporters signed a letter urging Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman to go fur free, made calls, and spoke out on social media. The most notable of its supporters are Ricky Gervais, who teamed up with In Defense of Animals to urge Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue to stop selling animal fur on Fur Free Friday last year. Both companies have now made the commitment.

This fur-free news breaks just days after a fur-free announcement from Canada Goose, which came hot on the heels of a self-imposed fur ban at Saks Fifth Avenue in April. Both of the major retailers will phase out fur from their product lines by 2022. Almost 10,000 In Defense of Animals supporters wrote to Canada Goose urging the company to ditch fur.

Animal victims of the fur trade are held captive, internally electrocuted, bludgeoned, gassed, and may even be skinned alive. More are trapped in the wild, where they suffer in agony until they die from exposure or are killed by trappers who rip their skins from their bodies.
