Demand Tortured Chimpanzees Get Promised Retirement

The National Institutes of Health has announced that 44 chimpanzees from the Alamogordo Primate Facility in New Mexico will be condemned to die behind bars. Instead of being released to sanctuary as planned and promised years ago, the chimpanzees are now slated to die in the same cells where they were tortured for “research.” These animals deserve to live out their remaining years in freedom. Please take action now to ensure these abused chimpanzees are finally sent to sanctuary!

In 2015, the National Institute of Health (NIH) halted its invasive chimpanzee research at the Alamogordo Primate Facility located on the Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico. The NIH committed to rehoming its remaining chimpanzees to sanctuaries, unless doing so would endanger their health. The agency now claims the chimpanzees at the Alamogordo Primate Facility are too frail to be moved. However, the panel responsible for making this decision was solely comprised of NIH veterinarians, which indicates a clear conflict of interest. This decision was likely motivated by the laboratory's selfish desire to continue receiving NIH funds.

When Bob Ingersoll, a renowned primatologist and an In Defense of Animals board member, heard about this horrendous betrayal, he said, “It’s outrageous that the NIH is prioritizing financial interests over animal well-being. Some of these animals may not be healthy enough for safe transportation, but this determination must be made carefully and in consultation with unbiased experts, given its grave consequences. Sanctuaries can doubtlessly give them a better life and any who stay behind will suffer significantly reduced welfare.”

What You Can Do:

The Alamogordo Primate Facility has a dark, bloody history. In 2004, its director was charged with animal cruelty following an In Defense of Animals investigation. Court documents state that three chimps died from electrocution due to unsafe living conditions.

Please help put an end to this senseless abuse by urging the NIH to reconsider its decision to keep the Alamogordo chimpanzees in prison.

1) Call the NIH at 301-496-4000. Here’s an example of what you can say.

Hi, my name is _____, and I’m calling to express my disappointment regarding the NIH’s decision not to send 44 chimpanzees from the Alamogordo Primate Facility to sanctuaries. The NIH claims the chimpanzees are too frail for safe transportation, but this decision was made by a panel of NIH veterinarians in a blatant conflict of interest. This decision was likely motivated by the lab’s desire to continue receiving NIH funds. I urge the NIH to convene an independent panel of veterinarians and behaviorists who are familiar with chimpanzee care in sanctuaries to review its decision.

2) We urgently need your help to raise $10,000 to sustain our lifesaving work, including advocating for abused chimpanzees, before Giving Tuesday on December 3rd, 2019. Please donate today or start your own Facebook fundraiser for In Defense of Animals to help end animal abuse forever.

3) Send our letter to the NIH’s Director, Chief of Staff, and Deputy Director for Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives by filling out the form on this page.
