Once upon a time, frogs turned into princes, but here at In Defense of Animals, we think they’re perfect just the way they are. 

In Defense of Animals, VINE Sanctuary, and Drag Story Hour Vermont are teaming up for a family-friendly celebration featuring beloved Vermont Drag Queens Katniss Everqueer and Emoji Nightmare. Come hear special readings of Frog and Toad stories, and learn about the fascinating frogs and toads who share our world.

Vermont drag performers Katniss Everqueer and Emoji Nightmare will bring their signature flair to the stage, reading a mix of their favorite children's books alongside special selections from Frog and Toad. For this event, Frog and Toad are helping us explore not only stories of love and connection but also the fascinating lives of real frogs and toads right here in Vermont.

Drag Story Hour brings drag performers into schools, libraries, and bookstores (and now sanctuaries!) to read stories to children. These events celebrate gender fluidity and self-expression while offering children and adults alike the opportunity to engage with queer role models. 

In between stories, we’ll take a closer look at Vermont’s real-life amphibians. Frogs and Toads play a vital role in the world’s ecosystems and serve as bioindicators of environmental health. They unfortunately face serious threats from habitat loss, disease, and road mortality. Each spring, amphibians emerge from hibernation and migrate to vernal pools to breed, often crossing dangerous roads to get there. We'll share how you can help protect them in your own community.

This special event takes place at VINE Sanctuary, an LGBTQ-led refuge for animals rescued from abuse and exploitation. VINE works at the intersection of animal liberation, environmental justice, and social justice, and serves as a safe and inspiring place for humans and other animals alike.
