Dumped Puppies at the Dump

Dumped Puppies at the Dump

Late last month, IDA’s Hope Animal Sanctuary (HAS) in Grenada, Mississippi was alerted to the abandonment of three five-to-six month old juvenile dogs at the Montgomery County dump on Highway 82, across from the County Barn. The sanctuary rescue team was able to rescue two of the cautious, but desperate pups.

Sadly, the third pup eluded all rescue efforts and the community cats residing in the area consistently beat him to the baited traps HAS had been carefully monitoring. Eric Phelps, formerly of IDA, had played an enormous role in the previous trapping and sterilizing efforts of the cats and now a local woman feeds and looks after the savvy felines who have found haven in the thickly wooded area surrounding the dumps.

Tragically, on April 1, the remaining juvenile was accidentally crushed to death in front of Director Stanley as she screamed and waved her arms at the driver of a vehicle entering the dump. The heartsick man mistook the pup for debris.

IDA is creating signs carrying information on HAS’s standing $750.00 reward offers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone caught abandoning an animal. The signs will be posted at this dump and other sites known for their frequency of animal abandonment.
