Connecticut Residents: URGENT: Prohibit the Use of Wild and Exotic Animals in Traveling Acts

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

For far too long, wild animals have been suffering in traveling acts, where they are transported around the country to perform for the sake of human entertainment. The animals are forced to perform under threat of painful punishment, confined in cramped crates as they are carted from show to show, and generally deprived of all that is natural to them. Animals have escaped from circuses, injured members of the public, and maimed or killed their handlers. Despite this danger, wild animals are often displayed in close proximity to the public in unsafe conditions. As a result of these stressful conditions, animals such as elephants, tigers, lions, bears, and monkeys suffer from a myriad of psychological and physical issues.

The good news is that at this very moment in Connecticut; there is a bill called Beulah's Law, which is named after an elephant who was exploited for entertainment until she died, that is challenging the use of wild and exotic animals in traveling acts. This bill is currently in the House of Representatives and will hopefully go to the Senate. In order for this to happen, the majority and minority leaders of both chambers must call it up for a vote. Most bills fail at this juncture because of time constraints of the session, which, in this case, ends May 4. We must act today to get this bill passed!

Beulah was an elephant from Connecticut who, despite debilitating health issues, was brought to a circus venue known as Big E to perform, and sadly she died. Beulah's Law, named in her memory, will help honor her heartbreaking legacy of performance and abuse. It is crucial that this bill be passed to prevent circus animal cruelty in Connecticut. The city of Bridgeport banned such acts in 2018 and it's past time for the entire state to get on board.

In Defense of Animals is asking Connecticut residents to call and email the majority and minority leaders of the Connecticut House and Senate, and urge them to vote YES on Beulah's Law.
