We have fought hard against animal suffering across the country in factory farms and fur farms, rodeos, laboratories, and more. Unfortunately, a bill moving rapidly through the Utah legislature would make protecting animals impossible at the local level in the state.

The bill, S.B. 113, would prohibit any county or municipality in Utah from passing local ordinances that would prohibit the operations of “animal enterprises” or places that use animals for profit, like factory farms. The bill includes animals who are farmed and used for research, entertainment, education, herding, transportation, and sport. Urge your representative to oppose the bill to ensure that communities can take action to protect animals of all kinds in the future. We must stop this bill from becoming law!

S.B. 113 passed the Utah Senate and is moving quickly through the House. While the bill exempts animal companions like dogs and cats in most circumstances, it leaves farmed animals like pigs, cows, sheep, and chickens, and “working” animals like horses, vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. The bill was also in part a reaction to the fur ban in California as well as growing interest in other areas to restrict livestock auctions and rodeos.

Animals face unimaginable cruelties in these industries. Victims of fur farming include foxes, chinchillas, mink, sables, coyotes, raccoon dogs, rabbits, and other fur-bearing animals. These animals are killed brutally and are bludgeoned, internally electrocuted, gassed, or shot before their fur is ripped from their bodies to make fur trim, coats, home decor, and accessories. Farmed animals suffer comparable cruelties for their flesh, milk, and eggs. Animals used in research and testing, including cats, dogs, rabbits, mice, and others, are subjected to horrific and painful experiments that are outdated and ineffective.

Please urge your representative to not support S.B. 113 so that your county can still exercise the right to take action for animals.
